Seriously, I had a blast last night watching this!
About a month ago, I randomly tuned into WWF (I still call it WWF, lawsuit be damned) and saw that The Rock was going to be hosting Wrestlemania this year. I watched all of Monday Night Raw that night, for the first time in ages. I followed up by watching Smackdown that Friday and then the following week, I blasted out a tweet saying that I was definitely going to order Wrestlemania and asked who wanted to come over. Withing an hour, the party was set. I hadn’t thrown a Wrestlemania party in something like a decade. I was excited.
Now let me backtrack a little. I positively grew up on wrestling. I mean I was weaned on the stuff. It was a family affair, you see. My mommy and my uncle grew up on the WWF as well. My grandparents used to take them to MSG all the time and they’d see the shows live. Some of my earliest memories are of me and my mommy sitting on the couch (she used to stay home with me when I was little) watching G.L.O.W. (that stands for gorgeous ladies of wrestling).
Wrestling was always on in our house. Back when there used to be two major federations instead of one, we’d go back and forth between being WWF faithful and WCW faithful, getting into one when the other got corny. After Vince McMahon acquired WCW, we still watched every week. During the 90’s and the whole Stone Cold/The Rock phenomenon, we watched religiously and had get-togethers for every major pay per view event on top of that. The house would be packed, usually with my friends, but mommy and grandma would make their presence felt as well. These parties always got rowdy. But then The Rock left, and so did we. I’d tune in every now and then but only rarely.
I was amazed at how quickly I got right back into it. But then again, I guess I shouldn’t have been. First of all, like millions and millions around the world, I freaking love The Rock! Say what you want but the man is gifted (last night’s Wrestlemania drew the largest crowd of any event in history at the Georgia Dome…make no mistake, it was The Rock that drew that crowd), entertaining and hella funny.

The show was amazing, the match between Triple H and the Undertaker (seriously, I used to have nightmares about that dude when I was little) being the absolute highlight (I could have done without Snooki, though). But more than that, it was just like old times with my sister and one of my friends from high school who used to attend my old parties being there, along with some newer friends.
And that’s really what it was all about. It was never really about all the ridiculous violence, half naked men, and blatant homo eroticism (although you have to admit it’s fun to watch…hey, everyone has their guilty pleasures). Wrestling, back then and now, was a way to spend regular quality time with my family, reconnect with my friends and just have lots of fun.
By the end of the night it totally hadn’t felt like it had been over ten years since I’d watched wrestling. It felt like I never left, kinda like riding a bike.
By the way, I still love The Rock and everything but um….
Randy Orton could totally get it!
